Flying with a Portable Oxygen Concentrator: 2026 Airline Rules for UAE Travellers

Why This Matters Before You Book

If you use a portable oxygen concentrator (POC) and you're flying to, from, or within the UAE, every major carrier requires advance medical clearance — you can't simply bring a POC onboard the way you might a wheelchair. The rules differ by airline in ways that matter: how much notice they need, which form they require, and which devices are approved. Getting this wrong can mean being denied boarding at the airport. Here's what each of the UAE's major carriers requires, sourced directly from their own published policies as of September 2026.

Emirates

Medical form: Emirates states you do not need to complete their MEDIF form for an approved POC.
Approved models: Emirates publishes a list of 25 approved POC models, including devices from the AirSep, Inogen One (G2/G3/G4), Invacare, Respironics and SeQuel Eclipse families.
Documentation: A signed physician's statement is required at check-in, confirming medical necessity, your ability to operate the device, and the maximum oxygen flow rate at cabin pressure.
Batteries: You must carry enough charged batteries for the entire journey plus a buffer for delays — there's no in-seat power for POCs.

flydubai

Notice period: At least 72 hours before departure.
Documentation: A "Physician's Statement for Air Travel with POC" form, submitted in advance and presented again at check-in.
Approved models: flydubai lists 26 approved POC models. If your device isn't listed but is FAA-approved, their guidance is to contact the Customer Centre at least 72 hours ahead to confirm.
Batteries: Enough batteries including one fully-charged spare for the whole journey — devices cannot be recharged in-flight or plugged into seat power.
Checked baggage: A POC can go in checked baggage only if empty/unpressurized, or with the battery removed and packed separately.

Air Arabia

Notice period: At least 48 hours before departure.
Documentation: Two documents at check-in — a MEDIF form completed by a licensed physician, and a separate Fit-to-Fly authorization letter from the Air Arabia Medical Centre. Forms go to medreport@airarabia.com.
Approved models: Air Arabia doesn't publish a model list — any device must meet FAA acceptance criteria and carry the FAA confirmation label.
Seating: Passengers using a POC cannot be seated in an exit row or the first row.

Etihad Airways

Notice period: At least 72 hours before departure.
Documentation: A MEDIF form plus a physician's medical report, issued within 14 days of the flight, submitted in English and signed in full — incomplete forms are rejected. Once approved, you'll receive a certificate from the Etihad Airways Medical Centre to carry with you.
Approved models: Etihad's published guidance doesn't list specific approved models — contact their medical assistance team directly to confirm your device is accepted.

A Note on Your Specific Device Model

Biomagna Med carries two portable oxygen concentrators: the Inogen Rove 6 and the SeQual Eclipse 5. Emirates' and flydubai's published approved-device lists name earlier models in the same product families (Inogen One G2/G3/G4, and "SeQuel Eclipse" without a version number) but don't explicitly list "Rove 6" or "Eclipse 5" by that exact name — these are newer releases, and airline lists don't always keep pace. Both airlines address this directly in their own guidance: flydubai says to contact their Customer Centre if your FAA-approved device isn't on the list, and Air Arabia and Etihad don't publish model lists at all, requiring only FAA compliance and medical sign-off. Our honest recommendation: confirm your exact model with the airline directly before booking, even though it's FAA-approved — don't assume it's included in an older list, and don't assume it's excluded either.

The General Checklist, Whichever Airline You Fly

1. Confirm your exact model is accepted. Check the airline's published list if they have one, or contact them directly if they don't.
2. Get your paperwork done early. A physician's statement or MEDIF form, completed well before the notice deadline — 48 to 72 hours depending on the airline.
3. Pack enough batteries. Charged batteries plus a spare, sized for the whole journey including possible delays — POCs can't be plugged into seat power or recharged in-flight.
4. Bring your documentation to the airport. Most airlines re-check your approval at check-in, not just when you first submitted it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my POC during the whole flight, including takeoff and landing?
This depends on your physician's statement and the airline's approval — some approvals cover the full flight, others only cruising altitude. Your MEDIF or physician's form should specify this, and cabin crew will follow what's on file.

Do I need different paperwork for a connecting flight with two different airlines?
Yes — each airline in your itinerary has its own POC policy and notice period, so you'll need to check and submit documentation separately for each leg if the carriers differ.

What if my POC isn't on an airline's approved list?
Contact the airline directly well before your notice deadline. Several airlines (flydubai explicitly, and Air Arabia and Etihad by not publishing lists at all) accept any FAA-approved device once medical clearance is granted — an absent listing doesn't necessarily mean a device is refused.
